Landscaping in Edmonton: What to Know
Edmonton yards come in two very different flavours, and we plan for both. In mature neighbourhoods such as Glenora, Westmount, Crestwood, Belgravia and the older parts of Strathcona and Highlands, lots are generous but crowded with big elms, spruce and decades of settled grade. Work there is about protecting root zones, correcting drainage that has crept toward the foundation over the years, and matching new stonework to homes with real character. In newer areas like Windermere, Keswick, Glenridding, Walker and the Meadows, we are usually building the entire yard from a rough-graded lot: topsoil, grading, sod or turf, beds, patios and fencing that has to satisfy the City of Edmonton’s lot grading approval before the yard is signed off.
Under most of the city sits heavy clay. It holds water, heaves in the freeze-thaw cycles of March and April, and punishes any patio or wall built without proper base preparation. Our hardscape work in Edmonton starts with excavation to stable subgrade, compacted granular base and geotextile where the clay demands it, so pavers and retaining walls stay level for decades. Positive drainage away from the house, swales between properties and, where needed, weeping tile or dry wells are part of nearly every design.
River valley and ravine lots in Riverbend, Rio Terrace, Windsor Park and along the Whitemud add slope stability and erosion to the list. Terraced walls, planted banks and staged construction that respects the City’s top-of-bank setbacks are our standard approach there. Infill builds on skinny lots need the opposite skill set: compact patios, privacy screening and drainage that works in a few metres of side yard.
Edmonton’s growing season is short, so we design for four seasons. Evergreens for structure in January, hardy perennials and shrubs rated for Zone 3, and lighting that makes the yard usable on a February evening. Because we are based in Spruce Grove, Edmonton is home ground for our crews: we are on site quickly, we know the permit and grading process, and we can usually schedule around the spring rush better than companies working out of town.
